Russia was prepared to shoot down the then-speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov’s airplane during the Russia’s armed invasion the Crimean peninsula in the spring of 2014. The Russian President’s Plenipotentiary Representative in Crimea Oleg Belaventsev made this statement in an interview to the Russian propaganda TV channel “NTV”.
Belaventsev said that Turchynov had sent emissaries to the peninsula, which had tried to persuade the leaders of Crimea “not to carry out their duties”, and they had allegedly sent the deputies menacing SMS.
Moreover, Belaventsev noted that Turchynov was going to fly to Crimea personally with a special force squad, but they had made it clear that he would not get to Simferopol. “He was going to fly here on two “sides”: one for himself, another one for a special force group. But we (the Russian side, — eds.) said: If you cross the border, we will shoot you down,” said Belaventsev.
