Russia’s Justice Ministry has refused to return Crimean political prisoner and filmmaker Oleg Sentsov back to Ukraine.

Today this was announced by Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine Serhiy Petukhov. According to him, Russia motivates the refusal alleging Sentsov‘s Russian citizenship.

“A Russian citizen with another citizenship is considered by the Russian Federation as a Russian citizen only. Due to Sentsov’s Russian citizenship his transfer to Ukraine is impossible in accordance with the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons 1983,” quoted Petukhov the Russian Ministry of Justice’s statement.

Russia automatically recognizes all the inhabitants of the annexed Crimea its citizens, even if they do not themselves. Political prisoner Oleg Sentsov has repeatedly stated about his non-Russian citizenship.

As a reminder, in August 2015 the North Caucasus Military District Court of Russia sentenced filmmaker Oleg Sentsov to 20 years of imprisonment on false charges of preparing terrorist attacks in Crimea annexed by Russia.
