According to the rules of international law destruction of residential buildings in Kerch for the Kerch bridge construction needs is a war crime committed by the Russian authorities.
This was stated by the head of the Law Center of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union Boris Zaharov.
The Russian authorities have plans to demolish six apartment buildings in Kerch because they are in the road of the bridge construction across the Kerch Strait. In this regard the Crimean authorities deprive the property for the Kerch bridge needs in a streamlined process.
According to the human rights activist, such actions are illegal. “In the context of of international law, any destruction by the Occupying Power of real or personal property belonging individually or collectively to private persons, or to the State, or to other public authorities, or to social or cooperative organizations, is prohibited by article 53 of the Geneva Convention except where such destruction is rendered absolutely necessary by military operations. But officially Russia makes war on nobody and the bridge is not to be bilt for military operations, so the Geneva Convention expressly prohibits such actions,”said Zakharov.
“In addition, the European Convention on human rights and fundamental freedoms in article 1 of Protocol 1 declares the inviolability of property, too” he added.
The lawyer underlined that such Russia’s actions to the property on the occupied territory were taken as a war crime.
