The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is in favour of amending the Constitution of Ukraine for granting the Crimean Tatars the right to self-determination.

“I emphasize once again that we should begin the process of amending Section 10 of the Constitution of Ukraine, which is called The Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The amendments are fully based on the inherent rights of the Crimean Tatar people on self-determination within the sovereign and independent State of Ukraine,” the President said today during a commemorative meeting in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the occasion of the Constitution Day of Ukraine.

Previously, Poroshenko said that he intended to initiate institution of a Constitutional Commission to explore changes to the Constitution regarding the provision of the Crimean Tatar people’s rights to self-determination within the Ukrainian State. The President stressed that Ukraine had belatedly recognized the need to create a national autonomy of the Crimean Tatars in Crimea.
