The need to be ready for a full-scale Russian invasion is the only reason making Ukraine carry out the military exercises. This was said today by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.
“I would like to emphasize once again: the need to be constantly prepared for a full-scale invasion by our aggressive neighbour is the only reason making us carry out these military exercises,” said the President.
He also said that the tests of surface-to-air missiles were being successfully held in the Black Sea area. “We have just received first reports on successful launches carried out this morning. Combat and transport aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units and radio-technical troops are also involved in these exercises. I would like to stress that the missile firings are taking place both in the airspace over the mainland Ukraine and the high seas in full conformity with international law,” said the President.
As a reminder, the exercises with aerial shootings of the Ukrainian Air Forces are being held in the southern part of Ukraine on December 1-2.
Yesterday, sources at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that Russia threatened Kiev with a rocket hit if Ukraine’s missile firings took place in the area of Crimea.
Earlier Rosaviatsiya (the Federal Air Transport Agency) said that Ukraine had decided to hold a missile firing in the flight information region of Simferopol on December 1 and 2. Russia considers this area its airspace, despite the fact that it belongs to Ukraine according to international standards.
Simferopol FIR (URFV) includes the Crimean peninsula, a large part of the Black and the Azov Seas, as well as the South of Ukraine. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recognizes Ukraine’s control over the area.
