Russian military journalist and writer Arkady Babchenko believes that Ukraine will eventually regain control of Donbass, but Russia will never return the annexed Crimea.
“Russia will return Crimea no longer. It will fight for the peninsula until the last Russian. It seems to me that Ukraine will not be able to regain Crimea neither in the short nor in the medium term,” he said in an interview to the Novoye Vremya (New Times) magazine.
As for Donbass, Babchenko believes that Ukraine has missed an opportunity to end the war for its own benefit, but there still is the chance to regain control over the occupied territories. “Ukraine had a chance to finish this war in the beginning, when only Slavyansk was occupied by small groups. But no one understood what was going on then, and in the end, it all led to Ilovaisk, the Donetsk airport, Debaltseve, and it now is as it is. Now any onward movement of any of the sides will automatically lead to a big war. Ukraine will certainly reconquer Donbass and will definitely regain these territories, but not earlier then Russia gives up on helping Donbass,” said the journalist.
According to him, once Russia stops helping the so-called LPR and DPR these quasi-States will cease to exist in two weeks.
