MEP from the Group of the European People’s Party from Poland Jacek Saryusz-Wolski claims that Ukraine abandoned the struggle for Crimea “too easily” under the pressure of the West and did not counter the invasion resulted in the annexation of the peninsula.
“The West should not insist that Ukraine did not fight for Crimea. Much later it turned out that it had not been the decision of Ukraine to give up defending against the Russian occupation by military means, but an insistent recommendation of the West. It was the first sign of the Western attitude towards the Crimean problem,” said Jacek Saryusz-Wolski.
“But I think that if there was resistance to the Russian occupation of Crimea, possibly the following occupation of Donbass wouldn’t have happened. Anyway, the events would develop differently. Under the pressure of the West Ukraine gave in too easily in Crimea,” added the MEP.
