According to the lawyer Ilya Novikov, Russian officials are eager to soften the sanctions against Russia in return for the Ukrainian pilot Nadezda Savchenko’s release, or other concessions.
“I believe that Russia still hopes that they will get something for Nadezda Savchenko. In my opinion, they are hoping for either the de facto recognition on the status of Crimea as a Russian territory, or for the easing of sanctions. According to my information, Russia won’t get anything like this,” said Novikov.
In the lawyer’s view, the question is not about what agreements and negotiations will take place before sentencing, but that the Russian Foreign Ministry has realized that during this period “there will be nothing of the kind, they must fix the loss and draw the line, and that they just have to lose less, without hoping to get something more”.
Novikov hopes that this message will be clearly brought to the Russian representatives by the American State Department during the next week. “In this case, we have the way to an exchange open or any other way to settle this query”, concluded the lawyer.
