EU Ambassador: the sanctions against Russia for Crimea won’t be lifted

The EU Ambassador to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli does not consider real to lift the sanctions against the Russian Federation for the annexation of Crimea. He said this at a press conference in Kiev.

“First of all, the annexation of Crimea is illegal, it is contrary to the international law and we do not recognize the annexation,” he said.

“There are the sanctions for the annexation. And I do not believe that the sanctions will be lifted soon. Russia urges upon the EU countries to lift the sanctions, but it is very unlikely to happen,” said the Ambassador.

Also he commented on the part of the sanctions imposed against the Russian Federation due to the action in Donbass, recalling that now there is a dialogue within the EU to prolongate them. “The sanctions, imposed due to the Donbass region, will end in January. This year the EU must decide what to do with the sanctions in the future, and I can’t predict the decision. There are those who believe that the sanctions were counterproductive and should be lifted. But, there are those who believe that the sanctions should be strengthened,” he said.
